You may know all about Rhuthun’s history as you walk up and down the town’s streets, but individuals and groups recently came together to learn more about the town. Guided walks, organized by Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych with the sponsorship of Llys Awelon Community Fund, Grŵp Cynefin and Read Construction.
During the guided walks, which took place on 28 and 29 September, several historical sites were visited, including the old Rhuthun railway, The Castle, St Peter’s Square and the nearby Church. Medwyn Williams, a blue badge guide presented detailed information about these sites, discussing their importance in the history of the town and their role in the community.

The attendees were full of praise for the walks, with one individual stating “I really enjoyed the experience. A caring and informative leader, nice that the information was suitable for children too!”
Iorwen Jones from the Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych said, “This trip was a great opportunity for new Welsh speakers to learn about their heritage and the importance of their place in society and to get to know new people.”

Art and craft workshops were held on both afternoons, where there was an opportunity to display creativity while learning about the town’s buildings and history. Mural creation workshops and stamp workshops were held with artists Cathryn Griffith and Donna Jones drawing attention to the town’s unique and historic features.
Gwion Tomos-Jones from Menter Iaith Sir Denbigh said “The workshops complemented the experience of learning about the town’s history and what there is to see if someone looks carefully. The hope is that people will look at some of the buildings across the town differently because of what they have learned”.

Following the art workshops, one parent said “My daughter and I enjoyed the afternoon. The length of the workshop suited us, with lots of different activities which was great fun, and we tried all of them.”
