As part of the Shwmae Su’mae Day 2024, Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych officers have been visiting some local businesses to encourage them to join the ‘Hapus i Siarad’ scheme.

The campaign, which is a partnership between Mentrau Iaith and the National Centre for Learning Welsh, offers support and resources to shops and small businesses where a member of staff speaks Welsh. After a successful pilot scheme in the counties of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Ceredigion and Flint and Wrexham earlier this year, businesses throughout Wales now have the opportunity to join the scheme and display a poster showing that they are ‘hapus i siarad’ Cymraeg with their customers. The resource pack also includes badges and ideas about how to encourage people, especially learners, to speak Welsh and gain confidence.

Welsh learners, currently having lessons with a Dysgu Cymraeg tutor have received cards in order to collect stamps when conversing in Welsh with staff. Those who fill in the card and return it to their tutors before the end of March 2025 will have the opportunity to win a residential weekend to practice or improve their Welsh.

Who is ‘Hapus i Siarad’ in our area?

Here are some businesses that have committed to the campaign so far:

The full list of participating businesses will be completed by 31 October.
