As we look forward to the beginning of summer, here’s a quick look back at the work of the Menter Iaith team, who have been busy supporting events at the end of the schools summer term.

Mared Morris, the new Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych assistant officer, has been actively involved at Ysgol Twm o’r Nant’s Summer Fair in Denbigh and at Ysgol Llewelyn in Rhyl over the past few weeks.

“It’s a real eye-opener to feel the buzz happening in primary schools across Denbighshire and hearing and seeing the Welsh language being used by pupils and parents – it’s a breath of fresh air,” said Mared, 20, from Denbigh, who is in her second year at Cardiff University studying Journalism, Media and Culture.

Among the resources available to parents at Ysgol Twm o’r Nant were a Welsh information stall for parents and children, colouring activities for pupils and their younger siblings, and of course, the highlight of the day – Magi Ann’s visit!

“The children just adore seeing Magi Ann and approaching her to say hello! She’s always a hit and creates a special memory of Menter Iaith’s work with children. There was great demand for Women’s Welsh Football Team colouring sheets, along with Seren and Sbarc.”

Over in Rhyl, nearly 200 young children took part in the school event, with all sorts of agencies offering information to equip parents with support in family life, language, culture and activities.

“At Ysgol Llewelyn, the children were given the opportunity to rap with Magi Ann during our visit and seeing their little faces light up was wonderful. They’re amazed to see a cartoon character come to life before their eyes. And of course, it helps parents to link Magi Ann with opportunities for their children to use Welsh.

“We made great connections with other agencies and charities at Ysgol Llewelyn, so hopefully we’ll get the chance to collaborate again with some of those who want to introduce Welsh to Denbighshire families,” said Mared.
