Who was Gwen daughter of Ellis from Llandyrnog? In a one character show at Neuadd y Dre, a stone’s throw away from where she was hanged in 1594, we learn more about Gwen the Witch and her cruel fate.

This is the first show of a national tour by Mewn Cymeriad (1 May) which traces the story of Gwen, daughter of Ellis, who was born here in Llandyrnog, Denbighshire.

Here in Wales only five people were executed as a result of witchcraft allegations, which is very different to other European countries of the era. Ironically, the story of Gwen’s life lives on, thanks to newspaper records and her court trial.

But who was Gwen, this versatile woman, married three times during a short life? Women’s status was low in the sixteenth century especially considering here was a girl who had special abilities to heal patients and animals from illness, disease and wounds.

Siân Melangell Dafydd, the author, said: “I hope we can correct some of the ‘witch myths’ we have about witches in Wales. My interest in witchcraft began when I realised that my personal practice of creating medicine for the family from wild plants, lotion and food, placed me in a tradition of women who did the same. I hope we can close the gap that exists between history and superstitions by giving Gwen, the wool spinner, linen maker, healer and charmer, a voice.”

Join Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych to watch the Welsh language performance in Neuadd y Dref Dinbych on Thursday evening, 1 May @ 7:30pm (doors open 7pm for drinks and cold drinks). The show is directed is Janet Aethwy and the talented actress from Sir Drefaldwyn, Lynwen Haf Roberts will bring Gwen to life on stage.

Tickets £12 (£8 for 14-16 year olds) available via the www.mewncymeriad.cymru

Please note: This is a Welsh language one person performance at Neuadd y Dre about Gwen Ferch Ellis, from Llandyrnog, one of 5 people throughout Wales hanged for witchcraft.
