After serving in Denbigh for over seven years, he emigrated with his family to the state of New York in order to serve the Welsh Congregationalists of the United States. He cherished a number of moral causes, but became known above all for his work as an abolitionist. Using the pulpit, the pen, the printing press, local associations and national political parties, he set out to radicalise Welsh Americans and encourage them to take action to free the slaves in the southern states. Although many Welsh Americans played a role in the campaign against slavery, Reverend Robert Everett was the most famous and influential of them.

Robert Everett served the Welsh-speaking community of North America, as a radical voice for women’s rights and pacifism. In his time his influence was extremely wide, and it is entirely appropriate that we remember that contribution in Denbigh exactly two centuries after he left the Lôn Swan pulpit.

Our lecturer is Professor Jerry Hunter, who is an American himself and an expert on the life of the Welsh in the United States. He is a bubbly and engaging lecturer, and it should be an absolutely excellent evening! The lecture will mainly be through the medium of Welsh; simultaeneous translation will be available but must be pre-booked at time of registration.

The evening is organised jointly between Menter Iaith Sir Denbigh and some of the town’s chapels, as part of the Denbigh Midsummer Festival programme. There is also an opportunity to visit three of Denbigh’s historic chapels during the afternoon, before the lecture. The doors of Capel Pendref, Capel Mawr and Lôn Swan Chapel will all be open from 3 – 6pm on the day.

Admission to the lecture will be free of charge but contributions are welcome on the evening towards the costs of the Chapel.
To reserve a seat and to register in advance for simultaneous interpretation, contact Denbigh Library on 01745 816313 or email llyfrgell.dinbych@sirddinbych.gov.uk

A lecture by Professor Jerry Hunter This year, as part of the Denbigh Midsummer Festival offer, Professor Jerry Hunter from Bangor University will be joining us in Capel Lôn Swan on Wednesday 21st June at 7pm to introduce us to the history of Robert Everett – ‘one of Wales’ forgotten heroes’.
